Mattel's take on Violent Femmes' '80s classic Blister in the Sun is as sunny and energetic as the original with her own full rock band to boot. "I'm high as a kite/ I just might stop to check you out," she sings, dressed in the music video as an ultra-mod Nancy Sinatra type. She wears matching crossword puzzle prints with her bandmates, dancing in a clean white space that looks almost like a vintage TV spot.

Trixie Mattel, the drag character of Brian Firkus, is famous for her stint on the increasingly popular TV series RuPaul’s Drag Race. She competed on Season 7 and later All Stars 3, of which she was the winner. She has also made a name for herself as co-host (with Katya Zamolodchikova) of the hilarious YouTube series UNHhh. She also released a documentary in 2019, Moving Parts, which followed her personal relationship with drag and other life endeavors.
Barbara, her third and newest album, features a "beach bum Malibu Barbie" aesthetic, representing the original concept for Trixie Mattel, a barbie. Two Birds was a tremendously exciting debut. The contrast between the mini album’s country-folk sound and Trixie Mattel’s trademark Barbie aesthetic make it an interesting odd-one-out and a badly needed breath of fresh air in today’s music landscape.
