Having exploded on the scene as a DJ to watch back in 2004, Anil Chawla has since soared through the ranks of the music world to establish himself as one of the UK’s most hotly-tipped electronic DJ/Producers. With an exclusive residency at Turnmills’ flagship Saturday night session, Together bringing him raves reviews and with a truck load of tracks (on labels like Cr2, Global Underground and Saved) setting dancefloors alight around the globe… 2007 is already gearing up to be Anil’s finest year to date. Anil’s tale began in Maidstone, Kent – as a resident for local night Mongo Bongo, which saw him mix it up alongside the then (relatively) unknowns Nic Fanciulli and Mark Knight. As word of his talent soon spread, it wasn’t long before dance bible Mixmag made Anil as one of their first ever ‘Mixmag Future Heroes’ and some of London’s leading clubs came knocking on his door. The legendary Turnmills wasted no time in offering Anil as many gigs as they could muster and unbelievably the following year (2005), Anil DJ’d at the club more times than any other DJ in the world – something ridiculous like 35 sets in total… not a bad start for a rookie at the start of his career! Anil’s Turnmills adventure has featured regular slots at The Gallery, City Loud and most recently Together - where he’s now very much part of the furniture, with his deep and melodic-funk, freaky-acid and electronic house. As a Together resident (and a very popular one at that), Anil has shared the bill with some of the world’s most influential players including Green Velvet, Josh Wink, John Acquaviva, MSTRKRFT, Etienne De Crecy, David Guetta and Felix Da Housecat to name a few and every time his sets have stood out equally alongside those of the more experienced global stars. The End, The Cross, Canvas, (all London), Sankey Soaps (Manchester), The Honeyclub (Brighton) and Mission (Leeds) are just a handful of some of the other UK hotspots to have had the ‘Chawla’ treatment, whilst he’s been racking up the air miles too with overseas gigs in Canada, Poland (Import!) and Georgia. Other regular commitments include Dusted dates – both in London and abroad (forthcoming), plus rather excitingly, the prospect of an ongoing international tour with cult label Global Underground. The GU tour comes on the back of his latest production masterpiece which was signed by the famous imprint. Anil’s ‘Leftorium’ track (a collaboration with Dale Anderson) features on the new ‘After Hours’ compilation and has been the biggest selling deep house record of 2007 so far (6 weeks at No.1 in Deep House Chart) on Beatport.com. The follow up EP, ‘Sheshi Loungin’ and ‘Panda Love’ (both with Dale Anderson) will be released on Global Underground in the summer, as well as appearing on the forthcoming ‘GUMixed’ compilation. Anil’s debut track with partner Dale - 'Disco Stew', was snapped up by Nic Fanciulli for his Saved Records label, whilst the follow up ‘Makes Me Feel’ featured on Fanciulli’s ‘Renaissance presents Nic Fanciulli Vol.1’ compilation. ‘Disco Stew’ and ‘Makes Me Feel’ are also set for a re-release this year complete with a new remix package. Anil’s remix of Tall Paul's 'Got It' (Duty Free Records) meanwhile received much critical acclaim and notable plays from Pete Tong on Radio 1 (two weeks in a row), whilst ‘Purple Fruit’ (Twisted Frequency) was hammered by the Trophy Twins on Radio 1 for 3 weeks on the bounce. If 2006 was the year that Anil began making some real noise with his productions, then 2007 will be the year when there’ll simply be no escaping his sound, as he has a plethora of releases scheduled between now and the summer. Look out for deep underground cuts like ‘Hysteria’ (Cr2), ‘Everyone Loves Candy’ and ‘Stuck In A Loop’ (both Vapour Recordings), ‘Fever’ (Fragile) and ‘Jurassic Car Park’ (Morrison), in addition to his tougher, acid-tinged collaborations with Sam Ball - ‘Daily Intake’, ‘Afterhours’ and ‘Melting Pot’ all due for release on Urbantorque. On top of that lot, ‘Everyone Loves Candy’ will appear on Hernan Cattaneo’s forthcoming ‘Renaissance’ compilation, plus there’s plenty more where that came from too, so watch out! On the strength of his productions, the remix floodgates have now well and truly opened and the offers are flying in. Forthcoming remixes for Global Underground include ‘Silverlake Pills’ by Marine Parade / breaks hero Adam Freeland and Stu Hirst’s ‘Saws & Sines’, with the reworkings of Stu Hirst’s ‘Choral (Strawberry Blonde) and Timo Garcia / Cheshire Catz’s ‘Just Get Over It’ (Berwick) already out on the street - the latter of which featured on Tall Paul’s ‘The Beat Technique’ compilation last year. With so many of his own tracks to pick from, Anil’s sets remain highly charged, very unique and always entertaining. Anil is very much the clubber’s DJ… always unselfishly playing for the crowd and letting the mood of the night determine his next track. Anil is held in very high regard by his peers and big-hitters like Hernan Cattaneo, Funk D’Void, Pete Tong, Nic Fanciulli, David Duriez, John Acquaviva, Tall Paul, King Unique, Paolo Mojo, Satoshi Tomiie, Demi, Steve Angello, James Zabiela, Mark Knight, Mike Monday, Dave Seaman, Max Graham, Chris Lake, Tim Sheridan, Cass & Mangan, Tom Stephan, Greg Vickers and James Talk are constantly championing his sound all over the world. Although his career only spans a few years, Anil’s experienced some other notable successes including DJing at the award-winning Get Loaded in the Park festival (London, 2005)… hosting his very own 2 hour ‘Mongo Bongo Radio Show’ on Ministry of Sound Radio for over 12 months (2005-06) – which featured guest mixes from pals like King Unique, Paolo Mojo and James Talk… being chosen by Tall Paul as his ‘Warm Up DJ’ of 2005 and his ‘Breakthrough DJ’ of 2006 (DJ Magazine Top 100 Poll)… and then following that up with two exclusive mixes for Tall Paul’s Kiss FM Radio show. With more original productions, more remixes, more late nights at Turnmills, more international gigs and more of the good stuff on the way… a betting man would put his money on this talented, young musician.
