Budapest Symphony Orchestra

The Symphonic Orchestra of the Hungarian Radio (known abroad under the name Budapest Symphony Orchestra, BPSO) was founded on Ernő Dohnányi’s initiative in 1943. Its main task is the high-level transmission of live music to listeners and concert audiences. Its repertoire covers the entire music literature from the Baroque to our days. The ensemble is the most competent interpreter of contemporary music in Hungary. As well as playing classical music, it is also well versed in interpreting lighter genres. Numerous concerts in Hungary and abroad, radio transmissions and CD recordings of almost the entire symphonic and oratorio repertoire have secured its rank among the leading orchestras of the world. Its recordings comprise innumerous operettas and film music as well. The various formations constituted by members of the Orchestra are capable of satisfying the composers’ most special musical needs. The recordings are made in studios equipped with the most up-to-date technical devices meeting the latest requirements. Leading critics of the world as well as guest conductors, soloists and composers working with the orchestra appreciate unanimously its balanced sound, adaptability and the sponsoring work carried out by popularizing and recording Hungarian contemporary music. As Hungary’s musical ambassador, the Orchestra has enhanced the reputation of Hungarian musical culture in more than fifty countries on four continents. The Orchestra is a steady, highly acclaimed constituent of Hungarian concert life and an appreciated quest at the most prestigious concert halls of the world. Critiques and interviews emphasize the ensemble’s special gifts and confident technique alike. Read more on Last.fm.
