Don Harvey: A Dance in Red, Open Music Volume One: An exceptional debut EP by the drummer for two former Faces; Ian McLagan and Ronnie Lane, as well as Charlie Sexton, Joe Ely & Billy Bragg. It features many of Austin’s finest musicians: Ephraim Owens (trumpet),Graham Reynolds (piano), Craig Ross (guitar), Brian Standefer (cello), Guy Forsyth, (harmonica), Bukka Allen (accordion), John Mills (bass clarinet), George Reiff (bass), Mark Andes (bass) and David Abeyta (guitar). Don is a soulful drummer & composer living in Austin, Texas. He was raised in New York, in a home filled with classical music. Don made his first professional recordings with Jonathan Geffen & & David Broza,two of Israel’s best-known recording artists, in Tel Aviv, where he lived from 1975-1980. Don's early experiences, recording & performing with musicians from the Middle East, had a lasting impact. In 1985, five years after moving to Los Angeles, Don toured the world with Charlie Sexton. Sexton introduced him to Austin, where he’s lived since 1989. Don’s performed & recorded with Ronnie Lane & Ian McLagan (both former members of Faces), Joe Ely, Billy Bragg, Alejandro Escovedo, Tonio K, Storyville, Iain Matthews (Fairport Convention), Martha Davis (the Motels), Jo Carol Pierce, David Halley, Rob Laufer and Michael Hall. He’s produced recordings for Beaver Nelson (including a duet with Lucinda Williams), Billy Harvey & actor/musician Lukas Haas. Don received the “Best Drummer” award at the 2006-2007 Austin Music Awards. He’s had the honor of being joined on-stage by Bruce Springsteen (with Joe Ely), Pete Townshend & Ronnie Wood (with Ian McLagan) and Wilco (with Billy Bragg). Don’s co-written songs with Tonio K, Charlie Sexton, Martha Davis and David Halley. Now, at age 52, Don’s composing his own instrumental music. He describes it as “Open Music,” which he defines as “influenced by many genres--unclassifiable.” These influences reflect Don’s musical journey; middle-eastern, blues, rock, ambient, jazz & classical. A Dance in Red, Open Music Volume One was recorded and engineered by George Reiff, mixed by Stuart Sullivan and mastered by Dave McNair. In 1995, Don Co-Founded the SIMS Foundation (Services Invested in Musician Support), which provides access to mental health care for Austin-area musicians. He has served on SIMS’ Board of Directors and as Interim Executive Director. Don Co-Owned the legendary Austin Rehearsal Complex (the ARC), a hub of Austin music for a decade.
