Hafiz Kemal was a Turkish singer and a well known exponent of the Gazel tradition of that country. He recorded several 78rpms, some of which can be found today on collections of Gazel music.Gazel is a traditional Turkish form of music that centers around vocal improvisation. Sometimes the voice is accompanied by Turkish flute and/or stringed instruments. But the focus is on the voice. The practice of Gazel was discouraged in Turkey in the mid-20th century, due to its association with nightclubs. It was in danger of dying out.
