Larry Clinton

There were at least two artists with the name Larry Clinton. 1. Larry Clinton (August 17, 1909 – May 2, 1985) was a trumpeter who became a prominent American bandleader. Clinton was born in Brooklyn, New York. His first stint as a bandleader was from 1937 to 1941, but he worked as a flight instructor during World War II, resuming his musical career and enjoying further success as a bandleader from 1948 to 1950. His practice of rearranging the works of famous composers like Debussy and Tchaikovsky and adding lyrics was known as "swinging the classics". His version of Debussy’s "Reverie", with vocalist Bea Wain, was particularly popular. Clinton also provided conventional arrangements for performers like the Dorsey brothers, Glen Gray, Louis Armstrong, and Bunny Berigan. He died in Tucson, Arizona. 2. Larry Clinton was an obscure soul singer from Philadelphia whose song "She's Wanted (In Three States)" became a monster on the British northern soul circuit. Original copies now sell for thousands of dollars. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
