Luciana Bigazzi

Luciana Bigazzi is a pianist and composer. Her artistic dimension is one of the emotional worlds of today’s new Italian instrumental music, expressed in an original language, primarily on the piano. After taking Diplomas in Piano (Turin Conservatory) and Harpsichord (Milan Conservatory), she took a two-year Scientific specialisation course in Musical cultures at “Tor Vergata” University in Rome. She furthered her studies in composition and the interpretation of her keyboard repertoire (with Emilia Fadini, Jörg Demus, Paul Badura Skoda and Lazar Berman, among others), developing a personal wealth of creative experience. She has been artistic director of C.I.S.M. – International Centre of Musical Studies, at Sermig in Turin, and has directed and taught courses in musical interpretation in other Italian cities. She has performed at international Festivals, and for television broadcasts by the Italian state broadcaster RAI, RAI International and other networks. She has collaborated with the Turin City Council as a musical consultant in the theatre field, and has been responsible for the artistic and musical aspects of several educational Theatre Projects. She has numerous recordings to her name, both as a solo artist and as artistic producer. Her recordings include: an appearance on the CD Concert For Solidarity (SARX/Ducale) recorded live; the CD Christmas Songs for Guitar and Piano (Nìccolò/Stradivarius), recorded with guitar player Maurizio Colonna, with whom she arranged and performed some of the best known Christmas Carols, producing refined instrumental versions for guitar-piano duo and for solo piano. In May 2006 she released her CD Lacoste-Works for Piano, with ten original compositions for piano, which she performs herself. The CD, which marked the launch of the NCM – New Classic Music label (EGEA Distribution), included an extraordinary appearance by jazz fusion guitar player Frank Gambale performing “Galaverna a Szrenica”. The score of the entire “Lacoste-Works for Piano” album was published by Carisch-Machiavelli Music Publishing © 2006. NCM – New Classic Music has also issued the CD Passages-Works for Piano (EGEA Distribution), with fourteen original compositions for piano, written and performed by Ms Bigazzi; guest performers on this album include Ivan Ciccarelli (in the opening piece) and Monica Smith playing crystal bowls (in two pieces) - Score published by Carisch-Machiavelli Music Publishing © 2008. As artistic producer, she has organised and coordinated concert, recording and video projects in Italy and the U.S.A., for Polydor (Polygram), Panarecord, Palladium (Ricordi), Playgame (Carisch), Nìccolò (Stradivarius), Libera/EGEA, Libera/EDEL and NCM/PKP. Her artistic output includes: the soundtrack for the film “Object of beauty” (starring John Malkovich and Andie MacDowell – directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg), recorded at Studio 55 in Hollywood (Los Angeles - California) with contributions from Paulinho Da Costa, Alex Acuña and Abraham Laboriel; the CD and video Imagery Suite by the guitar duo “Colonna & Gambale”, recorded in Rome; the CD Colonna & Gambale live (co-produced with Roberto Colombo); she has also produced (with Roberto Colombo) the CD Bon Voyage by the same duo for Libera-EDEL, which was presented in India in October 2007. She has organised numerous concerts, seminars and Master Classes (for the duo Colonna & Gambale, the duo Antonella Ruggiero & Maurizio Colonna and the trio Ruggiero-Colonna-Gambale). Her compositions and musical arrangements have been published by Edizioni Bèrben (her most significant compositions include: Holašovice for piano, Sault for piano, and instrumental versions of Christmas music), by Libera-BMG (Sanctus for voice and strings) and by Carisch-Machiavelli Music Publishing. She has also published articles in numerous magazines (Tastiere, Guitar Club, Drum Club, Suonare News, etc.), a Course of Music Theory and Reading and a number of newspaper columns (I didatti del Pianoforte, L’interpretazione, Le musiche per chitarra e pianoforte – Piano teachers, Interpretation, Music for guitar and piano, Instruments and traditions). In the column Strumenti e tradizioni (in Suonare News) she focused her attention in particular on ethnic instruments. She directs the Christmas Songs Collection of international scores (Bèrben), which includes instrumental versions and versions for instruments/orchestra, of traditional Christmas music from all over the world, by well-known contemporary musicians.
