Opium Black

Opium Black, Hartford Connecticut’s own and arguably New England’s biggest artist is ready to assume his place in the Canon of Hip Hop’s greats. Born in Brooklyn, New York into a West Indian household, Opium Black was exposed to the vast musical array of Caribbean rhythms and hip hop music. Opium grew up in a musical family that boasts the founding members of popular reggae band Morgan Heritage. Leaving Brooklyn at a young age, Opium Black relocated with his family to Hartford Connecticut and his long-standing love affair with the streets was born. As was the fate of many young black men immersed fully in the street activities that plagued one of America’s most dangerous cities, at the age of nineteen, Opium was arrested and started his eventual six and a half years bid in federal prison. In 2005, armed with his freedom and a new focus on his musical ambitions, Opium started from the ground up with his Heist International imprint and later with Full Eclipse Records, releasing mixtapes and enjoying local and national airplay with a slew of street singles and remixes. His most recent single is Out Da Hood with Youtube sensations Ahmir produced by the grammy winning production collective Basement Beats. In conjunction with IMG Recordings/Bungalo Records and their partnership with Universal Music Group, Opium is staking his claim on the hip hop landscape as one of the next greats.
