Urban Heroes

Urban Heroes is a Dutch rockband, from the city of Den Haag (The Hague). It all started with Jaap de Jonckheere (guitar), Martin Zonderop (bass) and Ad van der Ree (drums) who played together in the jazz rock formation Storm. They teamed up with Jeroen Ernst (keys) and Evert Nieuwstede (vocals) and formed The Urban Heroes in 1979. With Shell Schellekens as producer they started making records with a style that's a mixture of new wave and ska, with a hint of funk. Their first album 'Who said... Urban Heroes' even caught the attention of American critics who liked the sound. Their biggest success is Habadaba Riwikidi that reached the 21st position in the Dutch charts in June 1981. Other singles that reached the charts are Get it (March 1980) and Not another war (July 1980). A number of changes in the names in the band follow and after a dispute with their record company, The Urban Heroes split in 1983. The musicians all went their own way and one of the remarkable spin offs is the group Boom Boom Mancini. In 1989, 1994 and 2008 follow several attempts to revive the band, but with no commercial success. More detailed information (in Dutch) on the page about Urban Heroes at the Nederlands Pop Instituut.
