Βέρα Λάμπρου

Vera Labrou (Greek: Βέρα Λάμπρου), date of birth unknown, is a popular greek avant-garde/electro artist, mostly known for her massive hits "Το νινί σέρνει καράβι" (The Vagina Pulls Boat), "Αγόρι μου αρσενικό" (My Masculine Boy) and "Δώσε μου να πίνω τα υγρά σου" (Give Me to Drink Your Liquids). Having been offered numerous record deals from major labels, she currently refuses to sign in any of them to keep up with her indie - unconventional profile she has developed the last years. She is a mother of 3, however she refuses to talk about her personal life in her interviews. Vera debuted in 2004 through Minos-EMI with her hit album "Το νινί σέρνει καράβι". Despite turning platinum within a week, it only managed to peak at #2 behind "Όλα τα λεφτά", Στέλλα Μπεζαντάκου, her rival's second album. The album spawned 3 radio singles, the title track "Το νινί σέρνει καράβι", "Έτσι είμαι εγώ" and "Αγόρι μου αρσενικό", which charted in the Greek Airplay Chart at #1, #2 and #5 respectively. In January 2005 "Το νινί σέρνει καράβι" album was re-released to include Vera's second biggest hit "Δώσε μου να πίνω τα υγρά σου" and eventually managed to hit #1 in the Album Chart. By the end of the month it was certified 3x platinum. Vera released her second album overall - and first independent release - called "Γυναίκα Δηλητήριο" (Poisonous Woman) in late 2006. Having no lead single, the album flopped in the charts, only peaking at #10. However, due to the popularity of her previous "Δώσε μου να πίνω τα υγρά σου", which was included on the album as a bonus track, it managed to sell over 10,000 copies and was given a gold certification. Vera returned in early 2008 with her third album "Το νινί... το νινάκι". This time she changed the direction of her career, abandoning temporarily the electro-folk genre and moving towards the "Nisiotika" ("islandic" - traditional greek music played in the the Greek Archipelago). "Το νινί... το νινάκι" included 7 covers of traditional greek songs, plus a new song, the title track. She has been accused of singing sometimes off key but this is because Vera Labrou has her famour four octave range, which is difficult to control as the high notes come naturally out of her mouth. Her appearances cause massive hysteria and extreme reactions by her fans. In summer 2008 she embarked on her first european tour called "Το νινί πάει περιοδεία!" (The baby goes on tour). All her 45 dates were sold out. Her concert in Mykonos was given a limited DVD release in September 2008, however it was broadcast on TV a month later. In November 2008, Vera Labrou was asked by the Fleet Foxes to provide vocals on the single mix of their song Mykonos. Vera flew to Seattle to record the vocals but despite completing the song, due to unknown reasons the album version was released instead. Vera is in the recording process of her next studio album. In January 2009 it was announced that she would return to electro-folk, but this time the songs would be in english. Her first single "Cleavage" is set for a May 8th release. Read more on Last.fm.
