Their relationship started with Derek playing one of his mix tapes and Johnny following up with one of his. They both had a lot of mix tapes of their own with them and they just kept swapping tape for tape in Dan the Man's boom box. The paper trail 'craziness' happened and as the night progressed eventually they couldn't figure out who's tape had been put in. They honestly couldn't recognize who's was who's. They realized their mixing styles were so similar that they kept thinking they were playing one of their own when in fact it was always one of the others mix. Through the years they enjoyed listening to each others mixes as entertainment and as a philosophy and almost ritual.
